Asian American Organizing Project (AAOP) is seeking to hire a team of Canvasser Organizers to lead outreach efforts to young Asian (18 – 35 years old) residents and voters in the Metro area. Outreach efforts are primarily through digital and in-person means to our constituents in promoting civic awareness, protection, and resources about the 2021 municipal elections and redistricting. The position starts as soon as possible until filled. You’ll be working in an office setting and may work remotely if needed. Duties:

  • Co-lead and manage digital and in-person canvassing training, activities, debriefs, and support and uplift a great team working and peer to peer learning environment.
  • Provide election and redistricting outreach and education by sharing information and resources.
  • Recruit volunteers for AAOP civic initiatives, and collect voter pledges and registrations.
  • Gauge community members’ level of awareness of issues and barriers to civic participation.
  • Check and set up canvassing materials, and secondary review data collection and quality control
  • Provide feedback on elections and redistricting strategies and the use of different tactics 
  • Report to the Field Director.

Skill Sets Developed:

  • Basic team management, train the trainer, facilitation and dialogue, and experiential learning
  • Troubleshooting, identify concerns, and ability to mediate conflict resolution
  • Community outreach, engagement, education & recruitment
  • Active listening and communication, interpersonal and people skills, and critical thinking
  • Being well versed with technology such as ThruTalk, ThruText, and Virtual Phone Bank

Knowledge Gained:

  • Electoral process and issues affecting MN Asian communities, and Asian cultural nuances
  • Non-partisan electoral & civic engagement
  • Census and redistricting process and nuances

Experience: Some form of experience in canvassing (or customer service), teamwork, and leadership development focused. All you need is a willingness to learn and help out your community!

  • Strong commitment to civic engagement, and empowerment of young and underrepresented Asian communities, and strong commitment to economic, racial, and gender justice
  • Self-starter, excellent communication skills, good time management, and ability to meet deadlines
  • Enjoys meeting and interacting with new people, and people of all backgrounds and identities
  • Works well in a challenging environment both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to stay on task and problem solve, and ability to work in non-English speaking communities
  • A plus if, ability to speak, read or write Asian languages: Hmong, Vietnamese, Karen, Khmer, Lao, and Tagalog.
