Introducing New Narratives: Justice for George Floyd

Writer: Siena Iwasaki Milbauer

Since August 2020, we at AAOP have been proud to present New Narratives, a podcast showcasing dispatches from Minnesota that highlight the stories of Asian America. Now, we will be bringing you a special spinoff podcast series, “New Narratives: Justice for George Floyd”.

This mini-series of episodes will center around the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, the man who knelt on the neck of George Floyd for over 8 minutes while three other officers, Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng, and Thomas Lane stood by.

In “New Narratives: Justice for George Floyd,” New Narratives host Anya Steinberg (she/her) and AAOP Content Creator Intern Siena Iwasaki Milbauer (she/her) will lead a series of conversations exploring this trial from an Asian American lens. They’ll be looking at how faith intersects with organizing, what it means to have Black/Asian solidarity, and how we’ll rebuild our communities after the trial, no matter the outcome.

Episode 1 of “New Narratives: Justice for George Floyd” is available now on Anchor, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify. Please join us for these vital discussions.

And if you or someone you know has insights that might be valuable to this series, please reach out to Anya at anya@aaopmn.org. We would love to have your participation as a guest and/or community advisor.

This special series is brought to you by Asian American Organizing Project (AAOP), in collaboration with Buddhist Justice Reporter, a project led by BIPOC Buddhists looking to report on the police, criminal injustice, and the carceral state from a Buddhist lens, the Mellon Foundation, and the Kofi Annan Institute for Global Citizenship at Macalester College.
