Job Title: Organizing Fellow 

Hours: Minimum 25 hrs per week from June 1st to August 15th 

Priority Deadline: April 13, 2020

Final Deadline: May 10th, 2020

Stipend: $3,000

Asian American Organizing Project (AAOP) recognizes that there’s a need to sustain a civic engagement space and foster community leadership of young Asian community members to: join in solidarity across issues and build electoral power across diverse Asian communities and Communities of Color in Minnesota. We are excited to announce our fourth Organizing Fellowship (OF) cohort and are seeking 6 community members to join the OF’s 2020 democracy efforts towards closing the Minnesota Asian vote gap of 1.2 % by 2025. Young Asian American voters in Minnesota makeup 32% of the eligible Asian voter population and can make a difference in every Election outcome to reflect our livelihood.

Each OF team will be placed in these tracks: civic engagement, digital organizing, and community restorative justice. Throughout the program, the Fellows will receive core community organizing training, develop gender justice framework, and hands-on community engagement experience. Opportunities to collaborate with AAOP staff and programs such as Gender Justice, and Youth Program, and local and national partners.

Duties:

  • Research, outreach, and engage with Asian residents about community events and issues
  • Relational organizing and recruit volunteer base, leader, resident/community member
  • Develop work plan, community resources and workshop as related to specific track
  • Collaborate with AAOP leaders and partners
  • Participate in 2020 Election via field activities, voter education, registrations and pledges
  • Attend cohort meetings

Skill Sets Developed:

  • Partnership work, and community outreach, engagement, workshop design, and facilitation
  • Problem identification and solving, and conflict mediation and solution
  • Organizing and managing field activities
  • Familiarization with Voter Action Network (VAN)
  • Volunteer recruitment and management
  • Effective communication and active listening
  • Community relationship building
  • Storytelling and narrative building

Knowledge Gained:

  • Issues affecting MN Asian communities
  • Non-partisan electoral and civic engagement
  • Asian cultural nuances related to gender justice

Experience:

  • At least 1 year or if no experience, willingness to learn:
    • Canvassing and conducting short surveys; Voter Action Network (VAN); data entry; Volunteer recruitment, community outreach and facilitation.
  • Strong commitment to civic engagement, community organizing, and empowerment of young underrepresented Asian and Asian American communities with the ability to work in non-English speaking communities
  • Strong commitment to racial, economic, restorative justice and gender justice
  • Self-starter, great communication skills, good time management, and meeting due dates
  • Works well in challenging environment both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to stay on task and problem solve
  • Ability to effectively communicate with supervisors, fellow cohorts and other staff.
  • Preferred, but not required, bilingual in English and Asian languages
