Community Members Registered on National Voter Registration Day

Asian American Organizing Project (AAOP) registered 150 voters in the Twin Cities to celebrate the national holiday.

St. Paul – September 27, 2019 – 150 community members were registered to vote in the 2019 local elections as part of the nationwide celebration on National Voter Registration Day.

While 2019 is an off-year election, the importance of making sure every eligible American voter is able to vote cannot be understated. In St. Paul, City Councilmembers are up for election and these local representatives often make decisions that impact our communities directly. National Voter Registration Day is the right place to start by getting registered and participate in this St. Paul Election on November 5, 2019.

Over the course of two days, AAOP registered 150, pledged over 200, and reached out to over 500 community members at local grocery stores and college and high school campuses to make sure constituents knew what would be on their ballots.

“There’s usually a higher voter turnout during the Presidential Election every four years, but it’s just as important to ensure our community gets the opportunity to vote in every election, no matter how small,” says AAOP Executive Director Asian American Organizing Project Linda Her.

“Even local positions like the City Council affects our daily lives, because they set budget and policies in our neighborhoods which impacts public safety, affordable housing, street maintenance, and local parks and libraries.”

Founded in 2012, National Voter Registration Day is designed to create an annual moment when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their most basic right – the right to vote. More than two million Americans have registered to vote on this day since the inaugural National Voter Registration Day.
