Asian American Organizing Project (AAOP) Applauds Supreme Courts’ Decision to Block Citizenship Question
ST. PAUL — In a 5-4 vote, the U.S. Supreme Court of Justice ruled today that the Trump administration cannot include the citizenship question on the upcoming 2020 census form. While the citizenship question is currently blocked in this ruling, the court’s majority supported the census’s inclusion of the citizenship question.
The census takes place once every ten years. Ensuring an accurate count for the upcoming Census 2020 is vitally important to all Minnesotans. If our communities are undercounted, this would mean Minnesota will not receive our fair share of federal funding, services, and representation. The addition of the citizenship question to the upcoming 2020 census would cause a severe undercount of many communities, especially communities of color, immigrant families, low-income communities.
AAOP joins the community in applauding the court’s decision to block the citizenship question.
“We’re pleased to hear that the citizenship question has been blocked from the upcoming 2020 census. This means that the communities and families we work with are able to be counted without fear,” Executive Director Linda Her says. “But the fight isn’t over. We need to get involved and help ensure all Minnesotans are safe and counted so our state receives the funding needed for education like Pell Grants, SNAP, Section 8, medicaid, highway and bridge construction and other important programs.”
