About AAOP

Asian American Organizing Project is a non-partisan organization led by and for young Asian Minnesotans in the Twin Cities. Through our grassroots organizing efforts and programming, we aim to develop young Asian community leaders to resist oppression and co-create a more just future for their families, schools, communities, and cities. 

Purpose of Position

Members of the board of directors are trustees who act on behalf of an organization’s constituents, including service recipients, funders, members, the government and taxpayers. 

Responsibilities

  • Attend board and committee meetings and occasional functions, such as special events
  • Review agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings
  • Serve on committees and work collaboratively with other board members on special assignments
  • Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization and fully engage in identifying and securing financial resources and partnerships by leveraging connections and networks necessary for the organization to advance its mission
  • Suggest possible nominees to the board who can contribute to the work of the board and the organization
  • Keep up-to-date on developments in the organization’s field
  • Assist the board in carrying out its fiduciary responsibilities with guidance from staff and board Treasurer, such as reviewing the organization’s annual financial statements

Qualifications

  • No experience necessary! We ask for a commitment to and willingness to learn about AAOP’s beneficiaries and mission
  • Written and oral communication skills and interest in public speaking
  • Personal qualities of leadership, integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of AAOP’s beneficiaries
  • Fundraising and legal skills preferred, but not required

Work Environment

Most meetings are virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic with some in-person programming.

Time Commitment

AAOP’s board of directors is a working board and meets on a monthly basis. A board member can expect to spend approximately 5-10 hours a month (including regularly scheduled board meetings) on action items, committee meetings, trainings or any other task assigned by the board. The time commitment is subject to change given the organization’s needs.

Term

Each AAOP board member serves a two-year term barring resignation or removal. Any board member can resign prior to reaching the end of their term by submitting a letter of resignation to the board Chair and Executive Director. The board reserves the right to remove any member who violates the organization’s bylaws or neglects any of the responsibilities outlined below. This is an unpaid volunteer position.
