How do I register to vote?

To register to vote, you must be:

  • A U.S. citizen
  • At least 18 years old on Election Day
  • A resident of Minnesota for 20 days
  • Finished with all parts of any felony sentence
  • You can vote while under guardianship unless a judge specifically has revoked your right to vote.
  • You cannot vote if a court has ruled that you are legally incompetent.

You can register to vote 4 ways:

  1. Online — you would need an email address and identification number from your Minnesota driver’s license or Minnesota Card or the last four digits of your Social Security Number.
  2. You can submit an application through the mail to Ramsey County Elections prior to Election Day.
  3. You can also submit that application in person to Ramsey County Elections prior to Election Day.
  4. You can also register to vote on Election Day. Bring a photo ID with your current Minnesota address on it. Check out other forms of ID you can bring.

How do I vote?

  1. You can vote Absentee by requesting a ballot at mnvotes.org. The Secretary of State Office will send you a ballot through the mail for you to complete. Completed Absentee Ballots must be returned to the Secretary of State Office by Election Day 3PM.
  2. You can Early Vote in person starting from September 18 through November 2 by showing up to an Early Voting Polling Location to vote. You must be registered to vote prior. More info here.
  3. You can vote at the polls on Election Day — Tuesday, November 3rd. Polls are open 7AM to 8PM — be in line by 8PM to vote.

St. Paul uses Ranked-Choice Voting for local elections. This means that you can vote for the candidates you prefer in the order of preference. Watch the video on how to vote using rank choice here:
