Protest Safety Tips

Protests always start out peaceful, but they can quickly escalate. That’s why we want to make sure that you are safe. Here are four protest safety tips to keep in mind as you are attending a protest. As always, with COVID-19 still affecting all of us, continue to wear PPE and stay as physically distance as possible.

TIP #1: Bring a buddy!
Always pair up when attending a protest. This allows you to keep an eye on each other throughout the protest. Check in with your buddy to make sure they’re hydrated, safe, and on their well-being. Your buddy should also disclose any medical conditions as a precaution.

TIP #2: Know your limits.
Like we said, protests can escalate. And we know that everyone has a limit. Disclose with your buddy where your limit is. Is it when you see a confrontation? Is it when there is military presence? Is it when the tear gas comes out?

Knowing your limits and disclosing it means you and your buddy can focus on the issue at hand and leave before things are unsafe.

TIP #3: Practice situational awareness.
Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you. Who or what looks out of place? What is going on around you? Where do you need to be in order to be safe?

TIP #4: Have an exit strategy.
As you are observing what’s around you, note what routes to take if you and your buddy need to get to safety. Be aware of what’s going on around you and plan ahead so you know where exactly to go if you need to go.

These are not completely comprehensive, but just a few quick tips to prepare for any protest
