The US Census Bureau has released apportionment data and Minnesota has kept our 8th Congressional seat!
We know that it was the work of community organizations, community organizers, and volunteers like you who had come together to reach out to our Asian and BIPOC communities in Minnesota to make sure that we are all counted.
Our work began in 2018 when we started door knocking, phone banking, and canvassing in hot spot areas in the Twin Cities on the Census and continued throughout 2019 and 2020. Once the Census enumeration began, we also began pushing our community get counted – amidst the pandemic too.
Special thanks to our Census grantees! Whether they’ve been reaching out to our communities on the Census in previous decades or not, we know that this collective work is what ensured our communities are counted.
While the Census work is over, we know that we need to continue to have conversations about how this data will be used in the redistricting process. What do you know about redistricting? What questions do you have about it?
Census grantees included: Association of Nepalis in Minnesota, Center for Hmong Arts and Talent (CHAT), Chinese Social Services of MN, India Association of MN (IAM), National Asian American Association of Professionals – Minnesota (NAAAP), SEWA-AIFW, Siengkane Lao of Minnesota (SKL of MN), Tibetan American Foundation of Minnesota (TAFM), Wat Promawachirayan.
